ICYMI: Kaine For Virginia’s New Digital Ad, “Extreme,” Takes Cao To Task For Supporting A National Abortion Ban

Richmond, VA – Yesterday, on the two-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, the Kaine for Virginia campaign released a digital ad, “Extreme,” highlighting Hung Cao’s position on reproductive rights.

The ad is focused on what Cao said during his failed 2022 bid for the House against Representative Jennifer Wexton. Cao was “thrilled” about the Dobbs decision, and he pledged in a candidate questionnaire, to support a law “to protect innocent life from conception to natural death,” a national abortion ban with zero exceptions for rape and incest.

The Staunton News Leader, Washington Post, and Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on the importance of abortion rights in this year’s election and the “Extreme” digital ad.

The News Leader pointed out that Hung Cao has “started to walk back” his anti-choice stance, trying to hide his real feelings on a national abortion ban from Virginians.

  • Virginia Democrats are doubling down on access to reproductive health care as a key issue on the second anniversary of the Dobbs decision, with less than five months until the presidential election.
  • Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, who is seeking re-election this year, did not join the event in Richmond on Monday. Instead he noted the day with a post on X that said, “Reproductive rights are on the ballot this November—we must restore Roe.”
  • His campaign also released a new ad that highlights the position of his opponent – retired Navy captain Hung Cao – on access to reproductive health care. The ad focuses on what Cao had said during his 2022 campaign for Congress against Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton.
  • The 30-second ad begins by sharing Cao’s response after Roe v Wade was overturned. In a post on X, Cao had said he was “thrilled.” The ad also points out that he pledged, in a 2022 candidate questionnaire, to support a law “to protect innocent life from conception to natural death.” That would mean a nationwide ban on abortion with zero exceptions for rape or incest, Kaine’s campaign has said.
  • Cao has begun to walk back his former stance against access to reproductive health care and abortion by saying in radio interviews since his nomination that he does not support a “ban on anything.”

  • Virginia Democrats rallied Monday on a hill overlooking the state Capitol to highlight abortion rights as central to their strategy for this fall’s elections, with actress Ashley Judd lending star power to political leaders on the second anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
  • With at least three congressional seats also locked in competitive contests this year and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) seeking a third term, Democrats say the issue of abortion is going to be a central part of their effort to motivate their voters to turn out.
  • Also timed for the Dobbs anniversary, Kaine released an abortion-related ad Monday targeting his Republican opponent, Hung Cao. Calling him “too extreme for Virginia,” the ad charges that Cao supports a national law outlawing abortion and that he compared women seeking abortions to Nazis.

  • Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., cited his Republican challenger, Hung Cao, for supporting “a law to protect innocent life from conception to death” in a candidate survey by the Prince William & Manassas Family Alliance two years ago, when he was running for the Republican nomination in the 10th Congressional District.
