Dating back to his tenure as Mayor of Richmond, Tim Kaine has a decades-long record of keeping Virginia safe and cutting crime.
Tim believes weapons of war have no place on our streets or in our schools, which is why he supports universal background checks, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and providing more support for people facing mental health challenges. In 2022, he worked to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the first major federal gun safety in nearly three decades.
During his time in the Senate, Tim has worked to support Virginia’s law enforcement agencies by delivering over $40 million in Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) grants to Virginia, boosting public safety across the Commonwealth. He also passed the bipartisan Public Safety Officer Support Act to ensure that more families of fallen public safety officers access line-of-duty benefits — including the families of Virginia officers Jeffrey Smith and Howard Liebengood, who defended the Capitol during the January 6th insurrection.
Tim also helped pass the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act and worked across the aisle to pass the First Step Act to curb racial disparities in the criminal justice system.
